Steel City Big Pour!

Last weekend was the 3rd annual Steel City Big Pour here in Pittsburgh. The Big Pour, held at Construction Junction, has quickly become one of the best beer festivals in the region thanks to the more than 30 different breweries, 20 local food vendors and the amazing staff of people who put the whole thing together. With both afternoons sessions selling out in record time, the atmosphere was fun and festive all day. In addition to the great beer and food there was live music, on-site art demos featuring welding and chainsaws, custom painted kegorator raffles and more. If you live in the Pittsburgh area I highly recommend keeping an eye out for this festival next year.

Thanks to the networking prowess of the Beer Czar Mark S., the Beer Camp crew was able to attend as volunteers for Oskar Blues Brewery. We spent the day passing out samples of Dale’s Pale Ale, Mommas Little Yellow Pils, and the infamous Old Chub. We’d like to extend a big thank you to everyone who helped make this event happen and look forward to next year. So instead of the usual beer photos and information, check out some of my photos from the event to see what you’ve missed.

This Friday was the fist Firkin Friday that has featured Fat Head’s own beers. It was a quite night for a Friday, but the beer was delicious as usual. On the firkin was the gold medal winning Headhunter IPA. This beer is a real treat and held up very well in the firkin format. I highly recommend trying this beer.

We had a small group this week. I guess the nice weather and holiday weekend contributed. Personally, I see no reason why that should interfere with delicious beer drinking! Four of us made it to the bar and we had four beers to taste. Overall a good selection. The Double Dread and the Moloko Milk Stout stood out as the best of the bunch today.

In other news: Fat Heads continues to do well with their own beers at local competitions. The Güdenhoppy Pilsner won gold at the Cleveland Oktoberfest. Once again going up against well established breweries such as Great Lakes and Gordon Biersh, Fat Head’s brewery continues to impress the judges. That makes for two gold medals in as many competitions. Congrats!

Fat Head’s: September = Epic Beer Party

Fat Head’s had quite a bit of beer related fun lined up for the entire month of September. Check out all the upcoming events:

Friday Sept 4, 5pm
Fat Head’s Firkin Friday
Featuring a firkin of the award winning Headhunter IPA
I had this on cask the other day. It was very tasty. Really shows the quality of this beer to come through equally good on draft or cask. It still maintains a beautiful hoppy balance and a smooth rich finish.

This Friday will also kick off the beers that will represent Fat Heads at the GABF including:
• Headhunter IPA (Gold Winner)
• Up in Smoke Smoked Porter (Brewer Matt Cole thinks this is FH’s best chance at a medal in Denver)
• Battle Axe Baltic Porter
• Güdenhoppy Pils
• Oktoberfest
• Collaborative Evil Belgian Strong Ale
Here is some info on the Evil. A cool project amongst nine brewers to create their own Belgian Strong Ale recipe. Chow “The Most Metal Beer Art Ever?”

Friday Sept 11, 5pm
Founders Night
Both owners from the Founders brewery will be in attendance to welcome a few of their beers to the Fat Head’s taps including “Hand of Doom” Barrel Aged Imperial IPA. This one rarely leaves the brewery, should be good.

Saturday Sept 12
Steel City Big Pour
This beer fest has grown to be one of the best in the country. Fat Heads will be there representing the best of the local brews. Unfortunately, it’s sold out. Check out more info here.

Sunday Sept 13, 11am
Founders Breakfast Brunch
While the guys from Founders are in town, don’t miss the Founders Canadian Maple Stout. Fat Head’s will have one sixtel of this Maple Barrel aged Imperial Stout, at it will go quickly. And, while this beer sounds like it would make a pretty good breakfast by itself, it won’t hurt to have a few delicious waffles from Point Brugge Cafe. Word on the street is that these are THE best waffles in the city.  Get here no later then 11 if you want a chance to try some of this great breakfast spread.

Friday Sept 18
Firkin Friday with Great Lakes Brewing
This one is just scheduled. Details to follow soon. Stay tuned for updates

Thursday Sept 24 – Saturday Sept 26
The Great American Beer Fest, Denver CO
Not exactly local. But the trip out to Colorado is well worth it. Fat Heads Brewery will be tapping 8 beers at the event. If you’re making it out to the GABF, stop by and say hello. Check out more info here.

As you can see, September is going to be a great month for beer drinking in Pittsburgh, and Colorado. Stop by for one or all of these events and enjoy some great beers!
