Headhunter IPA: Best West Coast IPA!

I just wanted to post an update about Fat Head’s own Headhunter IPA winning Gold at the Bistro IPA Festival last weekend. The 12th Annual IPA Festival was held at Bistro in Hayward, CA. Matt Cole, (FH’s brewmaster) is friends with a few of the brewers on the west coast involved with the festival and was offered the opportunity to ship one of his own beers into the competition. In the face of some impressive company including Russian River, Green Flash, Miran, Pelican Pub, Firestone Walker, Pizza Port and many more, it was truly an honor to be included in the event. The Brookston Beer Bulletin reports that “the keg of Fat Head [sic] beer was sent via FedEx in a blue suitcase to The Bistro. Bistro owner Vic Kralj recounts that when he called Fat Heads brewer Matt Cole, who coincidentally was enjoying a beer in Wisconsin with Bay Area brewers Arne Johnson and Alec Moss, that his screams of delight could be heard through the phone by everyone around Vic.”

Considering that the competition featured 62 IPAs from 52 different breweries, it truly speaks to the quality of the Heahunter IPA to take the top honors. Congratulations to Matt, Glenn, and everyone else involved in making the Fat Head’s Brewery an early success!

News!
I don’t know too many details yet but, Fat Head’s own Headhunter IPA won Gold in the IPA Fest at The Bistro in Hayward, CA. Even though we’ve gone through quite a few barrels already in Pittsburgh, Matt (FH’s brew master extraordinaire) has been continuously perfecting the recipe. The latest barrel to go on tap in Pittsburgh is by far the best one yet. It’s good to see a local beer get great recognition so early in it’s life. Congratulations to Glenn, Matt and I guess… Geoff. Keep the good stuff coming!

July 25, 2009 Beer Camp Summer Edition

Epic

Epic

This rainy Saturday in July brought us the annual Summer Edition of Beer Camp at Dwight and Lisa’s house. The weather wasn’t exactly ideal for a pool party, but with the most epic line-up of beers the camp has ever seen (don’t quote me on that), it didn’t spoil any of the fun. When you combine a pool, hot tub, great food, friends and beverages, it’s hard not to have a good time. Mark “Beer Czar” Saucier brought us a special treat  from his recent trip to Europe. I had never danced with la fée verte, but knew it is was definitely worth a taste.

The Green Fairy

The Green Fairy

We had a large collection of beers for the tasting, 14. In addition to some great stuff from Avery, North Coast and Alaskan Brewing companies, we also had a 3-year (2007, ’08, ’09) set of Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot Barleywine. Despite the amount of “vintage” beers that we have the opportunity to taste, it’s rare that we have a lineage of one particular beer to compare. The Bigfoot Barleywine has always been one of my favorites in the category for it’s noticable hoppy characteristic. Sierra Nevada’s recipe hasn’t changed throughout the years (other then the natural changes in the flavors of the ingredients), but the aging revealed unique differences that lead to some great discussion.

With 14 beers to sample, Dwights famous Rita’s Frozen mixed drinks, Abinthe, and 4 coolers of craft beer, we had more then enough beverages to go around. Thanks again to Dwight and Lisa for hosting another great party and for inviting this motley crew into your home. Now… on to the beer list!

*Note: IC Light doesn’t really count as “beer”. We prefer to call it a “flavored water”. This was a spoof poor from our friend Lenny. He’s alright in our book even if he does like the flavored water!
